Social Studies Postcards

Dear Christine,
I went on vacation to France thinking I was going to have a ball eating all that French food we hear so much about, How its gourmet and so good. When I got here, the food was so scarce and expensive. The harvest was horrible this year. Most of the people were starving, since most of the people are in poverty due to the high taxes. I find it so ironic that they make the 3rd Estate pay the most in taxes. They work the hardest, make the least and pay the most? Not only are most of the people hungry, but they are so deprived and feel worthless. They have no rights. They hardly have voting rights, no right to own land. Its strange because these peasents are the foundation of the country. Without them, there is no one to actually physically build the buildings, clean the roads, keep things moving. The majority of the people that were suffering were paying attention to the Enlightenment philosphers that were saying that everyone is equal, born with rights of liberty and speech. Just because you are a priest shouldnt make you better than a farmer. Farmers give the people food, Priests give people emotional support. Not only did this make peasents realize, but now they were motivated. They were sick of treated so bad, when they didnt deserve it at all.

The people werent the only ones being treated bad, but the money was too. King Louis XIV was spending so much money, and borrowing so much more money for the American Revolution causing a major bankruptcy in the treasury. Not only was a lot of money being lost from that, but his wife, Marie Antoinette loved spending money on superficial things. She threw lavish parties, balls, spent money on jewels and tiaras, the finest dresses, best furniture etc. The 98% of the people of France, that were in the 3rd Estate got so fed up and finally decided to do something about it.
