Dear Ivona,
Hey! Im here in Kenya studying the people and their culture. The Kenyan people have just won their independence from the British(Europeans.) They came to Kenya and basically bogarted their way into the government and the Kenyan people's lives. They tried to make many cultural changes as well as social changes. They were rude and didnt care how the Kenyan people felt about these changes. They wanted to do things the way they felt was the "right" way. They took all the rights away from the Kenyan people. So what did the Kenyans do? They fought back. It was their country and they had a right to be independent in it. The Kikuyu people who were African nationalists called the Mau Mau started the movement. They rebeled against the British, but unlike Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr., the protests were not non violent. They used guns to shoot and kill people. They robbed people and many people were put into camps. Many Africans were arrested including a man named Jomo Kenyatta. He was the leader of the Kenyan African Union. The British wrongfully arrested him because they thought he was a part of the Mau Mau, Even though he wasnt. But jail wasnt a bad thing for him. He actually became very popular in jail. He was in jail for 7 years. The Kenyan people joined together to fight for Kenyatta's release. When he was let out of jail he became the leader of the Kenyan people. With the support of the Kenyan people, he won his people freedom from the British. The Kenyan flag was raised and the fighting was finally over. The colors of the Kenyan flag are red, black and green. Many African countries have these colors in their flag because they have a special meaning. Red is for the blood. Black is for the Black people. Green is for the land that was given to them by God. So it all ties together, Black people shed blood for the green land God gave them. |
